Meet Jade

Jade’s story began on Dyer Island in November 2022, when she was discovered abandoned as a fragile little chick. Thin, weak, and in desperate need of help, she was brought to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary—a place where second chances are possible.

From the start, Jade stood out. Born with a slightly skew beak, she carried her difference with quiet strength and calm grace. Because of her condition, Jade could never dive or chase fish in the wild because her beak doesn’t close fully, making it impossible to hold her breath underwater. But what could have been a limitation became part of her unique charm.

With patience, care, and determination, Jade achieved something remarkable: she learned to free-feed independently. For her, this was proof of resilience, a milestone that showed she could thrive in her own way.

Today, Jade is a beloved permanent resident, living a safe and happy life surrounded by care and comfort. Lucia found love with Jade. She is a beautiful reminder of perseverance and the importance of giving every penguin a chance to thrive.
