When our partner, the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) first opened its doors in 2015, their very first resident was Sandy, making her the oldest penguin in their care today.
Sandy’s journey began on the 3rd of May 2017, when she was rescued with a severely swollen head. While there were no other visible injuries, closer examination revealed that both her eyes had a milky appearance, confirming that she was completely blind.
Despite losing her sight, Sandy has adapted beautifully to life at the sanctuary. She has learned to move confidently through her surroundings and often chooses her favorite spot in front of the glass window, where she can enjoy the warmth of the sun.
Her resilience and gentle presence have made her a much-loved member of the APSS penguin family and a symbol of the sanctuary’s mission to give these endangered birds a second chance.
