Meet Sunshine

In July 2025, Sunshine arrived at our partner SAPREC’s facility after surviving a devastating seal attack. His right side had been torn open, leaving muscle and even his shoulder bone exposed. Thanks to the skill of the surgeon, Sunshine’s wounds were carefully repaired, and his long road to recovery began.

For weeks, he lived in isolation, receiving gentle daily baths to keep his injuries clean.

He was weak and dehydrated, so electrolytes helped restore his strength.

After regaining some strength, he was ready for the food he craved most, fresh, delicious fish, which he ate with gusto, making up for lost time.

As Sunshine’s body healed, he entered his annual molt. In a flurry of feathers, his damaged plumage gave way to sleek, beautiful new feathers; a transformation that marked his resilience.

Sadly, his flipper injury means he will never dive or swim fast enough to hunt in the wild. But at the sanctuary, Sunshine has a safe home, abundant food, and the chance to thrive in a different way.

Handsome and spirited, we hope Sunshine will one day pair with another resident penguin and help bring precious African Penguin chicks who carry forward the story of survival and hope.
