One Ranger. Thousands of Lives. And You Made It Possible

Meet Lwando Baleni, the incredible Seabird Ranger on Dyer Island.

Lwando plays a key role in protecting the critically endangered African penguin.

His daily work involves:

  • Monitoring penguin breeding success
  • Responding to emergency callouts
  • Supporting crucial seabird conservation efforts

Lwando says the part he enjoys most about his job is interacting with the endangered African penguins. Being in close contact with them, especially when capturing and helping injured individuals, brings him a great sense of joy and purpose.

Lwando’s journey began with CapeNature as a conservation student at Walker Bay Nature Reserve, fulfilling requirements for his Nature Conservation Diploma. He then served as a Pupil Landscape Support Officer at De Hoop Nature Reserve, before joining the Dyer Island Conservation Trust team.

His story is one of growth, resilience, and unwavering commitment to South Africa’s natural heritage.

“To me, being a ranger is about making a real difference every single day—to wildlife, to ecosystems, and future generations.”

The African Penguin population has declined by over 97% in the past century due to overfishing, habitat loss, and predation. Dyer Island remains one of their last strongholds. Every conservation tool, from artificial nests to ranger patrols and a new lookout tower, helps tip the scales toward their survival.

Through generous donations, we are able to sponsor Lwando who ensures round-the-clock monitoring and protection for these vulnerable birds.
