Meet Mambo

Everyone adores Mambo. Born as the second chick in 2020, he had a rough start. His older sibling was hogging all the food, and little Mambo’s weight began to drop. To give him a fighting chance, the team made the call to hand-rear him. And wow, did he thrive.

Mambo’s personality is larger than life. He thinks he’s human and acts like it too. He can also be a very sweet boy. He has a special bond with the volunteers who care for him. He’s a towel thief, a swing-ball champion, and lately, a nest-building machine. That last hobby? It’s not just for fun because Mambo’s officially reached sexual maturity and found himself a mate. He is very protective over her and their nest. He randomly bites whoever dares to walk past their home! Now we’re all holding our breath, waiting for the first egg to arrive. The excitement is real.

Mambo, all grown up and playing swing ball. Since Mambo was hand-reared by humans, he will remain a resident penguin. Now that he’s found his mate, their chicks will be released into the wild to bolster the African penguin population.
