Meet Lucia

Rescued in Struisbaai, about two and a half hours east of Cape Town, in December 2018, Lucia’s journey began with the challenge of a seal bite to her right shoulder. It was a tough start for such a tiny penguin, but her resilience shone through.

Today, she’s not just surviving, she’s thriving. As one of the cherished permanent residents at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary, Lucia enjoys a life of comfort, care, and endless fishy feasts. Lucia also found love with Jade.

And speaking of feasts . . . Lucia has a dining ritual all her own. She insists on crushing each fish before deciding if it’s worthy of her palate. Her quirky habit that never fails to delight our team and visitors.

Gentle, curious, and full of character, Lucia has become a true favorite. She is a daily reminder that strength can be soft, personality can be peculiar, and joy can be found in the smallest of moments.

Here’s to Lucia, a little penguin with a big spirit, and a living symbol of resilience, charm, and the heart of the sanctuary.
