2025: A Year of Penguins, Partners, and Progress

What does it take to protect a species on the edge? For the KruShan Foundation, the answer in 2025 looked like early mornings on a South African coastline, a ranger paddling out to an island colony, 32 abandoned chicks getting a second chance, and a room full of Austin neighbors learning why an endangered seabird halfway around the world matters to all of us.

This year, we deepened our roots, returning to our partners in South Africa, funding our third year of dedicated ranger protection at Dyer Island, and welcoming a vital new partner, SAPREC, whose work fills a 222 km gap along the coastline. We launched emergency fundraisers, delivered eight community talks, and spent the final months of the year listening hard to our supporters to shape what comes next.

The African penguin is critically endangered. But 2025 reminded us that when a community rallies around a cause, extraordinary things happen. Here’s a look back at everything we accomplished together.
